Acknowledgments
DAACS was funded by an initial 4-year grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (2000-2004). In 2004 the Archive received a 3-year grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (2005-2007) that provides for the addition of 22 new sites from the Chesapeake, the Carolinas and the Caribbean.
DAACS has received endowment support from the National Endowment for the Humanities in the form of a Challenge Grant (2001). In 2003 NEH designated DAACS part of its new We The People Initiative, which is designed to “explore significant events and themes in our nation’s history and culture and that advance knowledge of the principles that define America.”
We are grateful to Mr. John Cooke, Mrs. Linda K. Ford, Mr. John A. Griffin, Ms. Sonja Hoel and Mr. Thomas A. Saunders III for generous gifts to the DAACS endowment.
The Reed Foundation has provided generous support to the DAACS Caribbean Initiative in the form of scholarships and internships for students from the University of West Indies at Mona.
Additional funding and operating support has been provided by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation (Monticello) and the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies.
